Autism Awareness / Acceptance Month

HAPPY WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH!

Throughout the month of April we come together to raise awareness and gain acceptance for those with Autism. It’s a time for people to focus on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase the understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support and inspire a kinder, more inclusive world.

So we thought we’d share our experiences with autism. We are sharing our story because we are passionate about raising awareness and gaining acceptance and helping other families that may be struggling. And it’s ok to struggle, we all do!

Trust me I have my days crying and thinking far out how am I going to get through this… but you just do, because like any parent you do whatever you have to for your kids.

Our gorgeous and perfect Isla is 4. Everyday is a rollercoaster. We as a family have learnt to adapt and are still learning. We have gotten to know what works for Isla and we also know what really doesn’t. Life with Isla is forever changing – it can be loud, sleepless at times, messy (VERY, VERY MESSY), challenging, hopeful and also really special. It’s the little triumphs that can easily be taken for granted that we notice. She teaches us all every day. She has changed me, and I have grown as a person because of her. She makes me and those around her better! We wouldn’t change her for the world.

All the challenges all the struggles, all the judging eyes on you when people don’t understand, all these things are all worth it when you see her reach new milestones, you see her reach what at some points seemed impossible. She is so affectionate and one kiss, cuddle or I love you Mum and you know it’s all worth it.

For this World Autism Awareness Month I ask you all to be aware of what is going on with others, to not judge but offer empathy and a smile, to be inclusive and to realise no matter who we are we should all be treated with the same respect and dignity. Today and everyday take a moment to reflect on your words and your actions.

Let’s celebrate all those with Autism and how incredibly amazing and special they are! ❤️
